Just Another Cyclist Merchandise

Not sure if it is an act of extreme market cunning, an indication of hubris, or just an excuse for me to start buying stuff with images I want on them, but Just Another cyclist is proud to announce the launch of the online store!

First off – before any one asks, no I’m not trying to get rich here.  I am, however, trying to offset the costs of running the website.  Even more so, however:  it is just a whole lotta fun.  My own personal Just Another Cyclist (JAC) merchandise is already in the mail.  I’m not only a writer, I’m also a customer.

Another advantage to taking the time to get JAC merchandise worked out now could potentially have benefits for all of you:  contests.

Another great cyclist blogger – and diabetic

You’ve read about my diabetes here on JustAnotherCyclist a couple of times.  I’ve even claimed to not write about my diabetes much on this blog (as I write about diabetes on this blog – yet again!)  Nonetheless, it is a huge part of my life by necessity.  So it was with some interesting that I happened across another cyclist and diabetic – and blogger.

Helmets and the “They Can’t Hurt” theory

I’ve said it many many times, I’m neither pro- nor anti- helmet.  My statements on the subject have been very accurately described by others as ambivalent.

I may, however, be changing my mind.  And you, dear reader, get to come along for the ride.

So to stop skirting the issue, I’ll state my opinion, as it exists today:

I don’t really mind wearing a helmet, but I really don’t think they do squat to protect me.  The risks the helmet protect me from are the same risks I experience when walking down the street.  I’m just as comfortable riding my bike without a helmet as I am walking across my living room without a helmet.

And that is when the “Say what” and “this guy’s nuts” comments come on.  “Clearly you’re safer with a helmet on.   It’s obvious.  Anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron,” is another possible retort to my sentiment.

Should I be surprised?

I tend to ignore Facebook stuff a lot, so occasionally I go through and actually read / clean stuff.  I was not surprised when this popped up.  I may be a little surprised that it took so long, though!

Why can’t we all just get along?

What is it about cycling that seems to churn so much controversy and soap-opera like conflict? Is it the international nature of the sport? Football (aka soccer) does seem to suffer from some of the same, but not nearly to the extent that cycling does. Tennis has the same problem, though. Maybe that is what is going on, cycling fans are like tennis fans, only there are a whole lot more people to get worked up about competing in the top events.

Cycling Sacramento ain’t what it used to be

I’ll admit – it has been sometime since I’ve really spent any time in downtown Sacramento.  Odd, considering that I live in the greater Sacto area – not so odd if you recall that up until recently I was working in the Palo Alto area.  In a few years the feel of downtown has really changed.  And something else has changed.  I counted no less than 15 folks out riding their bikes on my roughly 8 mile ride to work.

Heading into the winter with 90 degrees

Well – I thought winter was on its way. But the last couple of days have put me into a tail spin.  In the 90s this weekend.  I’d also taken a couple of days off from the bike (yes – that does indeed mean my #15mpd slipped.)  The result – I actually felt better and stronger than I can recall feeling recently.  What gives?  The season winds down and I seem to be peaking?  Well, at least I can say I reaching peak performance just in time for Worlds.

Except, of course, I don’t actually race.  *Sigh*

Use your head while riding

Warning – Just Another Cyclist is about to jump into the cycling helmet debate.  If you’ve had about all you can stand of the endless arguing on this issue (and who can blame you really?) then perhaps you’ll find one of my other articles more to your taste.

I also want to point out that you will likely not walk away with a clear impression that I’m on one side of the issue or the other.  I’m decidedly neither pro nor anti helmet.  I wear a helmet when I ride if I feel like it.  I generally always wear it on group rides more out of peer pressure (everybody’s wearing one!) or habit than anything else.  I almost always wear gloves when I ride to protect my hands if (or should I say when) I happen to hit the pavement, and the helmet is kinda in the same category.  On the other hand, I do not ride any differently if I don’t have my helmet on than when I do.

The main reason for my indecision is that I’ve not seen anything that would make me think that one side of the argument or the other is correct.  I decided to do a little more digging into the issue and see what I could come up with.
