Sorry this took so long to answer, just now saw it. A 1:45 ride each way on the train. During that time I can snooze, talk to the other cyclists (lots of them.), and not stress about the traffic on I-580.

Correct – the bones needed to heal more at that point. The trainer was not an option soon after surgery as no weight at all was supposed to be put on the feet.

The risk there was a fall or suddenly putting my foot down resulting in a rebreaking of the bones. The stationary trainer mitigated those risks. That, coupled with the fact that cycling shoes have rigid soles without flex made it a reasonable activity.

Or could you have been spinning on the trainer soon after the actual surgery?

They have dedicated bicycle cars which were marvelous.

My kevlar Bontrager tired lasted me years – I had them on the bicycle for 10 years, but road it consistently to work for 2 years with only 1 or 2 flats ever.

I will pick it up next weekend. I’m 6′-0″ with a 33.5″ inseam. The 57 is a perfect fit. I tried the bike out in Feb and loved it.

I tested a 54. It actually wasn’t bad and if there wasn’t a 52 in the shop for me to test I probably would have went for it and been reasonably happy. It was only riding them back to back that made the 52 seem like a better fit for me.

I honestly don’t know (and haven’t yet asked Salsa) precisely how their bikes are measured. It has a slightly slanted top tube that can impact frame sizing. I wrote about this awhile ago at https://justanothercyclist.com/2011/03/03/how-to-measure-you-bike-frame/.

Thanks for the reply.
I’m 5’7″ as well and am eyeing either the 52cm or 54cm. Salsa’s sizing chart recommends the latter, but since I am unfamiliar with road bike sizing (I’ve only had MTBs the last 20 years) I’m thinking the 54 might be too big for me, since I have to consider the stem length AND bar reach.
