Fitting a Busch & Müller Toplight Flat S Plus taillight to the back of a rack that doesn’t have matching 50mm or 80mm mounting holes. (Solution: I drilled three holes into an unused Pletscher seatstay bridge plate–two holes to receive bolts from the light and a third hole to attach the assembly to the rack’s original single-hole reflector bracket.) Might have saved myself a little trouble if I had done a bit of research on taillight standards. (justanothercyclist.com) […]

That does look interesting. I’m actually going to be picking up a new light as I just lost my Planet bike blinky when it was clipped to my backpack, and this is definitely one I’ll take a look at. Thanks.

I just returned from REI and purchased a Cateye Reflex AUTO. Its a brand new model of light, most stores online don’t even seem to carry it yet.

It comes with mounting brackets for stays/seatposts, etc. AND comes with a mounting bracket for a rack. 50mm OR 80 mm width holes. I paid $22.95 at my local REI, fantastic product. It is amazingly bright and “intelligent” as it will turn on and off automatically, etc..

I do sometimes carry panniers on my rack. Good advice for those that do not, however.

I have a Trek 520 and there’s no way to mount a tail light on the factory rack. I have to clip it on to my trunk bag (luckily it has a loop for it). I’ve seen some of the planet bike superflashes mounted on the seat stay. I believe both of my superflash lights came with this mounting bracket, but I probably lost them. That might be something to keep in mind if you can’t modify your rack. The left seat stay might suffice if you don’t have a pannier in the way.
